It's the last day of 2011 and I felt like sharing some of the side-work I did over the past year. For one reason or another I chose to not put this stuff up here. Maybe because I felt it didn't represent the style of work I'd like to be known for. But I suppose it's better to show off than to be forever hidden in a dusty computer folder only for myself.

My gf asked me to come up with some designs for her work at a spinal-cord injury rehabilitation center

This is a poster I illustrated & designed for the short film "Chainsaw found Jesus" which was screened at SXSW. We were going for the "Chick"-style(you know those small religious comics that are mysteriously spread across the country in stores & windshield wipers)

Here's an animation I just finished recently: Crackhead getting hit over the head by a skater. It's part of a skate video for Vice magazine online, produced by HYSTK in Chicago. The video was shot in Argentina, and this crackhead scene actually happened but the videographers didn't get a chance to film it in time, so they commissioned me to animate it for them. I'll post a link once Vice puts the final skate video up.

We're giving out some free cds at our show this Friday in St. Charles. This is the album artwork that will go along with it. The cd consists of 3 or 4 live songs that were recorded last month at our practice
space. I'm sure we'll have extras after Friday so if anyone wants one let me know & I'd be happy to either send a digital album to you or a hard copy through the mail.

Pictured below we see some earlier concepts for the cd. I liked them all but for some reason the one I finally chose stood out to me the most.

Day of the Dead Storyreel

This is a storyreel (animated storyboard) I made at school in 2008. It starts off with an older woman decorating a gravestone with ornaments & food. When she leaves, the relatives unearth themselves to see what gifts were left behind.

When I actually make this animation it'll look really different, and have completely different shots, camera angles, etc. This was mostly an exercise in simple blocking. I might even make it stop-motion animation with hand-made poseable puppets.

The song is by one of my mom's relatives in Mexico, and the lyrics don't really have anything to do with day of the dead, but I liked the mood and flow of it for this piece.

A friend from school & I have been working everyday on this project together for about 4 weeks now. It's an animation to help advertise Lee Denim Day, which helps support breast cancer. It'll be done in less than a month so you should see it here shortly.

Here's some of the stuff we've done so far:

• Draw out designs for several paper cut-out puppets.
• Cut them out
• Paint them with watercolors
• Hinge each limb together with glue & paper
• Animate them under a camera slowly but surley (like stop-motion animation)
• Composite the character animation together with backgrounds on a a cpu

..we're about half-way done. Every step is tedious & intricate; these things are about 5 inches tall on average. Some, like a full body puppet, have as many as 16 limbs & 16 hinges. Check out these images. Everything is still in progress. Here's a sketch from the storyboard.

School is out forever. I'm just happy I won't have to write another paper ever again. Actually, I'm gonna write term papers for myself, and put them on a shelf, papers on my own terms.
Anyways here's an old animation from last year that I never got around to showing. It was my first attempt at using paper cut-out puppets to animate with.

Hello all (or rather, Erik Moore, haha..hopefully more people read this though). I suck at updating, and especially lately. But not without good reason, I've been, and am, busy with finishing up my last semester of school. I have 2 weeks left of studenthood, then comes adulthood. Here's some pictures I took w/my phone of a short animation my friend & I have been working on for the past few months or so..

life without homework is so good. I'm gonna post some animations from school soon, Just gotta edit them a little.
These drawings were for a school project my cousin Erik was working on. I don't thinki'll ever get tired of drawing of skeletons. I'm gonna be like 100 yrs old in 2085, drawing skeletons still, hopefully by perfect memory. I always think of the way human bodies work, starting from the bare bones. The skull holds the most important part; brain, also holds eyes; to see, mouth; to ingest energy from food, then the rib cage, limbs, & all that they do. After that I start thinking about the muscles, nervous, circulatory, ans systems...and then I just kinda get sidetracked & forget about the organs, skin, hair, and so on. You get the idea. Each individual part is amazing on its own. Blood cells. are packages . being sent all over your body, finding their way finally to your brain, the main computer, to deliver oxygen. Sometimes it makes me feel bad to see people neglect their machine. I need to work out.

Despite being told not to trace photographs all my life, I feel like it's a good exercise in several ways; learning proportions, facial expressions, clothing folds, composition.. Plus it's kinda fun. This isn't from school or anything, I just found this random picture online & wanted to draw all these kids for some reason.

This is the first shot from another short animation I might finish after school. It's about Day of the Dead. I'm still working on the storyboards, maybe I'll put them here when I'm done.

doodlin' 'round chicago, on the way to school or in class.

I just saw bolt a few hours ago. I actually liked it a lot.. on the same level as Kung Fu Panda probably. My favorite thing about was the character design & acting. Some of the characters, especially the humans, had so much unique personality & style, it was crazy. I don't wanna go any further cuz it'll be just me geeking out for a handful of paragraphs, you should just watch it yourself.

P.s. Here's a cool podcast I found a while ago. Eriks, you might wanna listen to this, it's an audio recording of this woman who lectures on creative writing, she also makes her own comics, etc... but it's basically her talking about how to write easier and more creatively. I thought it was interesting: mp3

Apple Tree Story

Here's a lil poster mockup for a story I made up while at school. I'm not actually working on this film right now, but maybe after I graduate & know flash well enough, I can start it up on my free time. If you click on it you can see how it's layered & would work in flash, or traditional paper cut-out animation. It's about 8 minutes long & narrated like a Dr. Seuss book, set during a depression..about this kid, Riley, who has the power to turn apples into gold by chewing on them. Actually, I'll just show you the logline, which I wrote a few months ago & think is pretty funny:

When a hungry young boy discovers his power to turn apples into money, the jealousy of his best friend leads to unfavorable exploitation encouraged by their economically depressed small town.

As you can see, I haven't been updating much lately. There's only 3 weeks of school left & I've been working on final projects already. Not much to write about. Today after school as I was on the bus I felt a light movement by my coat pocket. I checked to see if my wallet/phone were there and realized my wallet was gone. I turn behind me and see this guy looking straight out the window intensely. I said to him something like, "excuse me sir, sorry to bother you, but I was wondering if you happened to take my wallet." Well, I didn't really say that, but it was kinda funny like that. He must've been deaf, or playing it, cuz I couldn't understand him at all. After a minute or two of asking him to show me what he's got under his jacket in hand, he finally flipped out and sneakily threw my wallet on the ground, making it seem like it was there all along (he didn't take any money). Then everyone around me got into it and the guy was all mad/whatever. He stormed towards the front, but the driver didn't let him out, then he psuhed his way to the back and pulled the emergency lever and ran out... probably because he heard some ladies talking about calling the cops. All in all, I learned to button my pockets from now on whenever I'm near other humans.

Here's a lil' ship I made a few weeks ago, to be modeled in 3d by another student soon. And that dude with the suspenders is the main character. I actually wanted him to have smaller, football shaped eyes & a pointy nose (see my original design below), but after collaborating with other students, and being away in Mexico for a week, this is the final character model. He reminds me of salad fingers and my cousin mixed together.

I have some animations from my alternative strategies for animation class that i can put up soon, maybe next week.

I've been busy with school lately, but I really should post here more often. I've been thinking about getting my own laptop, and if everything goes as planned I'll have one within a month or so. The first thing I'm gonna do is get flash, the animating program. I've never tried it but from what I've heard & seen lately, I'm sure I'll learn it in no time. I can't wait to actually try it out & hopefully post some short animations here eventually, even if it's just like a little toaster dancing with a blender.

Falling over a Ledge

On Monday I went with Jenni to her first day of school and would draw while she was in class. I was sitting on a high ledge like this at one point, with spider webs around & the dizzy feeling of the wind pushing me over. It was such a strange feeling that I felt like I was dreaming.

Another Summer Day...

...spent indoors. Just like yesterday, I've been reading my world history textbook all day. And I'll be doing the same thing tomorrow, and the next week, and the next. It's all interesting, but I'm tired of schoolwork. Even though I work 3 nights a week I feel like my days are always busy.

I never really stopped to think why I'm writing what I do everyday. It all started with my trip to California last month, I wanted to share my travels. Well now that it's just me doing my daily does, it's gotten less goodly. My goal, when starting this blog, was to draw everyday and upload my drawings everynight. Well now al this other stuff is getting in the way, and I barely have time to draw. The whole point of this site was for me to be encouraged to keep a daily sketchblog. This is what's gonna happen: I'm gonna take an hour out of my day, everyday, no matter how busy I am, and just draw. I'll try to upload regularly too, but I'm having scanner problems, so I gotta figure that out first.

Wish me luck. I really hope I get it together and post more drawings than words from now on.

Independence Weekend

Alright Friday...

Well last night we practiced til about 3am, so I didn't wake up til almost noon. Got ready and worked on the 4th of July for a few hours, then met up with Jenni & drove to Hanover Park to see the fireworks with a group of about ten? We walked up this tall landfill and saw atleast 10 different firework shows all around from different cities. Probably the best way I've ever seen fireworks, but I wish we got there earlier. Went back to Cassie's & made a fire with damp logs.

Saturday/// I read some homework about Europeans thinking they're better than everyone else in the 1500's and trying to make everyone christian. Well they ended up succeeding for the most part...except for Japan. Anyways, I didn't get much done cuz I took some allergy pills that were apparantly drowsy-inducing. I took a nap at Jenni's and then drove to Cassie's for Jessica's b-day. It was a good ol' time drinking water the whole night (had to wake up early the next morning to continue homework).

One week

Seeing as it's been a week since my last update, it's obvious that I'm gonna start posting more sporadically from now on. Alright, here's what went down since last Wednesday.

Thursday- I forget what happened, but at night we had practice and e'erbody got tipsy.

Sorry for the crappy quality but this was drawn on a pizza box and all I had was my camera phone

Friday- Work, then watched Wall-E with Chris, Gabo, & Eric. One of the best animations I've seen, ever.

Saturday- Chris & I woke at about 8am and left to Wizard World (the comic convention). Same old stuff like every year, except I bought a handful of reasonably priced sketchbooks. Afterwards we drove about 3 hours past Dekalb to some small town, I think it's called Dickson, and met up with Jenni & co. for her birthday camping weekend.

Sunday- Woke up at 7:30am to pack up and leave since we were asked to vacate the premises after breaking the no alcohol rule. We ended up going to some random park and cooking out there. By the time we finished eating it was only barely noon. We fought a Bob l'eponge piñata, then everyone got sleepy. Drove back to Jenni's house, cooked up some food and camped out in her backyard.

Monday- Jenni's birthday...we didn't do much. Cleaned up the mess outside, drove around a lot, bought her some bike supplies, we had dinner with her family...I think that's it.

Tuesday- Jenni has summer school classes at 8:30am almost every weekday, so I often wake up at 8 and start my day. Even though I had a full day ahead of me, I felt like I didn't have enough free time. Random chores all day.

Wednesday- Same deal, got up early and did stuff around the house all day, then had to work, met up with Jenni at my house at 10pm and drove to Chris's. We watched Minority Report, which is still awesome, and some of Pans Labyrinth with Chris, Eric, & Cassie til about 3am.

Thursday- Is today. I'll be doing homework all day and then having band practice at night. I just found out that the short essays I have to write every week have to be 5 pages long. This class better be the last where I have to write essays. I've been doing them for too long in my life.

I can't believe I haven't had enough spare time since Thursday to write anything. Thursday night through Saturday afternoon I went to Milwaukee with the bandmates..erik too now that he's back from Peru. Well fun was had. Saturday night was Knuckles' formal party. We sept over and had breakfast Sunday morning, hung out a little.. Then I went home, worked for 2 hours, had a big family dinner at my house, slept, Monday morning I took jenni to school early, got my tire fixed, fixed jenni bike tire tube, cleaned out it the fish lair, chores, picked up jenni at 9:30, nothing matters and what if it did, went to jenni's, watched fresh prince while jenni did Spanish homework, oh yeah I was on my online class for anwhike earlier too, and finally, I'm here on my phone wrirong & watching home improvement.

Two's Day

Well first Jenni & I were gonna visit her grandpa's house, but there was so much traffic that we had to just turn around and go back to Jenni's. That was at like 10am. We had watermelon, green beans, & peas for lunch, then rode bikes to downtown Batavia. I bought Jenni a new bike lock, we rested at Panera, bought a loaf of bread to go, and headed to the movie theater. I watched Kung Fu Panda again, still awesome. We cut the bread in half like Abu & Aladdin.

Rode our bikes back. Then we drove to the pet store and I bought 2 fish and a crayfish (which looks like a little lobster kinda). Drove home, put the fish in the fishtank (Jenni bought me one for my birthday) and then watched a movie.

Moon Day

I just watched this show bout UFOs. In one of the stories a town
witnessed a UFO crash into a ditch and it had Egyptian-like symbols
all over the side. Half the town saw it and half didn't, causing
lifelong friendships to end. Right away dozens of military officials
came and took the UFO away. Alright, I know there are skeptics our
there, but if there are hundreds of accounts of stories like this, &
the government never explains where these ufo are taken..well you just
have to admit that there's something out there.

And if Egyptian-like writings were written on, it makes me think that
past civilizations, like the mayans too, might have had connections.
Intergalactic relationships? It just boggles my mind that there are
people out there, government officials, who have he evidence in their
hands...possiby connections to these aliens. Seriousy. They wouldnt be
threatening people to keep quiet and be so secretive if they were just
identified flying objects.

Sun Day

Father's day was today. My father raised me, his father raised him,
and so on all the way into the past, roughly 5000 years. Before humans
apes raised their kids. Before apes; rodents, reptiles, fish, sea
creatures, algae. Happy Algae's day everyone! I had to stop because
before algae, plant life and cells. But I refuse to accept that plant
life and cells can be fathers. Actually I guess cells can raise their
offspring...teaching them the ways of cellular activity.

I just found out the earth is halfway through its life. The sun will
go out in 5 billion years. That makes the Earth a middle-aged man,
just like my dad. So happy father's day to my dad and to all of ours,
but more importantly to the Sun for giving birth to our home, algae,
humans, myself.

Woke up at Jenni's at like 10, had pancakes, hung out for a while. Jenni got me an aquarium, which will house many awesome fish for years to come. Went home and met up with my family to go have dinner. Chris, Laura, & Jenni came too. African food, home, watched tv.

Fri Day

Woke up really late today. Worked 5-9, went to Jenni's and celebrated my birthday with (in order of appearance) Jenni, Cassie, Eric, Chris, Dani, Eddie, Gabo, Jessica, Katie, Jared, and another. Pretty much just hung out, talking and playing board games, eating cupcakes and pizza, wearing bday bash hats. Check out these pictures though...Jessica bought this comic book from an 8 year old kid selling lemonade on some corner. If he made this thing by himself, it's awesome. But it looks like somebody helped him out with it.

It had like 4 comics all stapled together. This one reads: "Super Kid. Super Kid Comics. Mini Comic-Book. Dr. Flame's Approach. Part 1. Super kid, prepare to get ROASTED! On your part, yes, but on the other hand prepare to be put out! Flame V.S. Super."

Not that a kid isn't capable of drawing this, but some of the dialogue and graphic layout seems a little too good.

Jenni & I went to Millenium Park, Chinatown, and Wicker Park today, then took the train back home to hang out with Eddie, Chris, & Eric. We all went to see the new Hulk movie, Dani too. It was fun, but the movie sucked.

Jenni & I took her dogs for long walk through the Batavia preserve, I
worked 5-10pm, and tomorrow we're going to chicago all day.

Chris, Brandon, & I saw Kung Fu Panda. It was one of the best movies I've seen this year, and definately the best animation of this year, so far.Afterwards I went home and had dinner by my lonesome, then drove to Jenni's house with the windows rolled down. We watched "What Dreams May Come, " starring Robin Williams. It was good, but I wish I would've seen it on a bigger screen since it has some really nice art in it.

So we get to Jenni's & fall asleep in the living room with her dogs, wake up at 2pm, I go home, unpack, go to the grocery store with my mom, have dinner at home with family & Chris too, hang out with Eddie & Chris til midnight, & fall asleep. Here's some more pictures.

Sunday

Sunday...we, packed up our stuff and hung around the pool for a while. Then we returned our cooler that we bought. Jenni, Cassie, Victor, & I had subway and watched Zohan, which isn't very good. Dropped Victor back at the naval base and then headed to LA. we got to the airport after 10pm, got to chicago at like 8am Monday morning. The future.

Today we went to Venice beach, an hour from where we were(Oxnard). First we just parked at the first spot we found and laid around on the beach. A little while later we drove to where all the happenings we happening. We were only around here for a few hours..wish we could've spent more time on this beach. It's like a long street right next to the beach where there's an outdoor gym, skatepark, people skating, big crowds, small bands (drum circles, blues, hippy new age old men music, electric guitarist on roller blades, a dj, and maybe a few more that we actually saw), tons of stores, medical marijuana dealers, restaurants, smoke shops everywhere, vendors, artists, handmade works of all sorts, etc...

After Venice we went to Red Lobster. Don't ask me why, I can't remember. Get a load of the outside of the restaurant though. This looks like the outside of a fancy hotel, but in Oxnard, every store has spanish tiles, archways, and palm trees. I like that.

Afterwards... We must have gotten drunk one last time in the jacuzzi, like every night.

At around noon we hiked up this zig-zag mountain-hill. Then we went to
the beach across the street. After the beach we had dinner at the
hotel, I think. We drank the rest of the night with victor's friend
Poopie, who's from Texas but sounds like a new jersey Irish Australian
mix. We then talked to these 2 30 yr-old men on the jacuzzi. Played
cards with 5 more of victor's friends til 2am.

We drove to LA today and walked around for a little. Its not as
different as I thought it'd be. The weather has been really nice here,
I wish the water was warmer though.

Day 2

Cąptàïń'ś łõg: Êårlïęr wé gøt a lïttlę tïpsÿ in the
jåcûz whîlè cątçhìñg sõmè rãÿš. Then we went to the store
with victor and bought some more supplies. Ate sandwiches, drove an
hour to this beach that has dozens of fire pits at night. Now we're
going back to our hotel room.

Day 1

This is the longest day..we've all been up since 2am. After getting to
our hotel (pictured below) we bought some groceries and then swam in
the pool. Actually the pool is too cold so we just drank beer in the
jacuzzi. Later on Victor picked us up and took us to a Mexican
restaurant, his navy base, the beach (which is cold), and finally we
went back to the hotel at 7:30. We were all so tired so we just went
to sleep.

We got into LA at 9am today. Drove around wanting to see a beach, so
we drove to long beach. After seeing the ocean port from far away we
waited around for this restaurant to open. I'm trying to figure out
